Rhodes or Hammond: Which Sound Fits Your Song?
The Fender Rhodes is soft, round and a little bell-like. It suits ballads, soul, jazz-leaning pop and anything that needs warmth without taking over the vocal.
The Hammond organ with a Leslie speaker is bigger and more physical. It can swell under a chorus, add grit to a rock track or bring a church-like lift to a gospel feel.
If you are unsure, ask yourself whether the part should glow or push. Glow usually points to Rhodes; push usually points to Hammond.
You can always listen to the audio samples on this site and tell us which one sounds closest to what you hear in your head.
